Results day is a rollercoaster of emotions. Whether your university plans went exactly as you hoped or took a slight detour, there’s absolutely no need to panic. In the UK, there is a process called Clearing, and it’s your chance to find that perfect university spot. Think of it as a wide-open door, leading you straight to where you’re meant to be, and we’re here to guide you every step of the way.
What is Clearing?
Clearing is how universities fill their remaining course places after results are released. Maybe someone dropped out or didn’t meet the offer requirements – whatever the reason, there’s space up for grabs. And that means opportunity, even if your results weren’t what you expected.Prospective students who either didn’t receive any offers or didn’t meet the conditions of their offers can then contact universities directly to inquire about their available places.Students who have changed their minds about their chosen course or institution can also use Clearing to explore alternative options.
When is Clearing?
Clearing usually kicks off in August, right after those significant A-level results are released on the 14th of August, and it generally runs all the way through to September. It’s a pretty busy time for everyone involved, but if you know what to do and stay organised, you’ll navigate it just fine.
Your Simple Steps Through Clearing
Feeling a little bit lost? We’ve broken down the whole process into easy-to-follow steps to help you find your way.
Results day:
First things first, jump onto UCAS Track to see your application status. If it says ‘Unconditional’ for your firm choice, you’re all sorted – huge congratulations. If, however, it shows ‘Unsuccessful’, or you don’t have a confirmed place, then don’t worry. Clearing is now your best friend, and you’ll see the ‘Add Clearing choice’ button in UCAS Track.
Explore your options:
This is your big chance to think about what you truly want. Consider your strengths and what subjects genuinely grab your attention. This reflection time is really important. Once you have a clearer idea, head over to the UCAS search tool to filter for Clearing vacancies. Dig into the course content, modules, and entry requirements carefully, even for universities or subjects you hadn’t initially considered.
Make the call:
Once you’ve identified the courses you’re interested in, you should contact the universities directly. Have your UCAS ID and exam results to hand, as you’ll likely need them for reference. Be prepared to discuss your qualifications, your reasons for applying, and any relevant experience or achievements.
If they make you a verbal offer over the phone, that’s a huge step. Be sure to write down all the important details like the course name, the university, and any conditions, as this will help you later.
Secure your place:
Finally, head back to UCAS Track and officially add your new course choice. The university will then confirm it on their end, and then the place is yours.
Find somewhere to live:
Now you’ve secured your university place, it’s time to find your new home, and we can help with this.
